What to Expect On the Day of Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Surgery

During the fat transfer breast augmentation procedure, our plastic surgeon, Dr. Hankins, will first use general or local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. From there, excess fat is removed from one or more areas of the body (often using liposuction), purified, and then the transferred fat cells are injected into the breasts. The number of fat injections used depends on the results you’re looking for. Depending on the procedure, you may or may not be awake. Minor procedures can be done with local or tumescent anesthesia only, whereas more extensive procedures may require IV sedation. Fat transfer procedures must be done incrementally to ensure the final result meets the patient’s desires, as the procedure is permanent. This may require multiple appointments to achieve the desired result.

Patients will require special care for up to two weeks or more after surgery. Please make arrangements to have a close friend or family member retrieve you from the surgery and assist you around the house. Resting in the first few days is important—and do not reach for any shelves! Patients may expect bruising and swelling immediately after the surgery. Eventually, these symptoms should reduce or go away, allowing you to appreciate your new breasts!

Christopher Hankins, MD, is a plastic surgeon specializing in facial, breast, and body aesthetic surgery. He also has advanced training in hand surgery, breast reconstruction after cancer, and other reconstructive surgical procedures. Dr. Hankins completed five plastic surgery fellowships with highly distinguished physician mentors in the United States and the United Kingdom, including a Plastic and Microsurgery fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine and a Hand Surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. How Many Appointments Will I Need?

Fat transfer breast augmentations require incremental fat transfers to achieve the final breast shape and volume, as the final result is permanent. This may require multiple appointments to achieve the desired look. You will need a consultation, surgery, and follow-up to ensure your recovery is going smoothly.

Dr. Hankins wants to ensure that he gets it right and that you will be satisfied with your results. During your consultation, you can determine how many sessions will be needed.

How Long Until I See Results?

Special care is required for two weeks post-treatment. The fat transfer breast augmentation procedure is typically an outpatient procedure so that you can go home on the day of treatment. You will likely see some swelling and bruising, but those side effects will subside independently.

That said, you will need someone to drive you home. You’ll want to rest for the first few days, and then you should be able to return to work once Dr. Hankins has cleared you, as long as your work isn’t too strenuous or involves heavy lifting.

You will see results immediately, with permanent results appearing in 6 months or less. However, most results won’t appear until the swelling decreases and the transferred fat tissue develops its blood supply. It usually takes a few months before you see the final results.
