During the fat transfer breast augmentation procedure, our plastic surgeon, Dr. Hankins, will first use general or local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. From there, excess fat is removed from one or more areas of the body (often using liposuction), purified, and then the transferred fat cells are injected into the breasts. The number of fat injections used depends on the results you’re looking for.

Depending on the procedure, you may or may not be awake. Minor procedures can be done with local or tumescent anesthesia only, whereas more extensive procedures may require IV sedation.

Fat transfer procedures must be done incrementally to ensure the final result meets the patient’s desires, as the procedure is permanent. This may require multiple appointments to achieve the desired result.

Christopher Hankins, MD, is a plastic surgeon specializing in facial, breast, and body aesthetic surgery. He also has advanced training in hand surgery, breast reconstruction after cancer, and other reconstructive surgical procedures.
