What is a Breast Augmentation + Breast Lift?

Breast augmentation and breast lift, medically known as mammoplasty and mastopexy, respectively, are FDA-approved surgical procedures that address women’s challenges with the size, shape, or asymmetry of their breasts. Augmentation is usually done with implants, either artificial silicone or saline implants, or naturally via liposuction and fat transfer from another area of the body.
The combined procedure will be an implant and then a lift to increase the breast size and raise the final resting place of the breast on the chest. This will be completed with a final nipple placement to define the overall contour. Look at the individual pages for Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift to learn more about each procedure.

What’s the
first step?

Suppose you’re interested in getting a breast augmentation and breast lift combined surgery in the Houston area. In that case, the first step is to schedule an initial consultation with cosmetic surgeon Dr. Christopher Hankins. He will discuss your medical history, goals, and desires, as well as any concerns you might have. This will include a discussion of the size and type of implants and the various techniques with their associated benefits and risks.
Dr. Hankins can show you “before-and-after” photos of past patients and even offer you implant sizers, which will allow you to see what you would like with a larger implant size. He will also discuss various breast lift incisions to see which one you would like to choose given the combined procedure and to minimize trauma.
Once you agree on the details, Dr. Hankins will design your surgical plan. Our Patient Coordinator will help you with pricing options, surgery scheduling, and pre-operative instructions.

“Dr. Hankins performed magic!”

I had the privilege of having Dr. Hankins perform a 2 stage wise pattern augmentation mastopexy in May 2019. I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2018 and lost SO must breast tissue. Approaching age 50 I was very self conscious about being totally flat chested and what I did have just sagged. Dr. Hankins performed magic! His professionalism, bedside manner and honesty was exactly what I wanted in a surgeon. My results are amazing! My breast are perfectly proportioned, the exact size I was desiring and I feel so confident about myself. I highly recommend Dr. Hankins and have every intention of having him perform any and all other future procedures that I will be having in Thank you to his staff and of course to you Dr Hankins!!!

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation + Breast Lift Surgery

When you arrive on the day of surgery, Dr. Hankins and his staff will receive you and get you settled in the procedure room. They will go over your surgery plan once more to make sure everyone agrees, and then an anesthetist will administer general anesthesia so you are comfortable during your procedure.
The time it takes for the procedure varies depending on which technique is being used for each procedure. For instance, the fat transfer method for augmentation will require more operative time depending on the extent of liposuctioned areas and your desired breast size.
After you are sedated, Dr. Hankins will make incisions hidden in your natural creases and folds to minimize visible scarring. After he is finished with the implant or fat graft, he will start working on the breast lift, manipulating the nipple and areola to improve the contour while also considering the shape and firmness of the underlying tissue in the breast.
He will finally close any incisions and place drains if needed. In addition, he will put on a compression garment to keep the new breasts in place and to minimize swelling.
We recommend you read more about the individual procedures on the Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift pages. [LINKS]

Breast Augmentation + Breast Lift Recovery

After the procedure, Dr. Hankins’ staff will monitor you in the recovery room to make sure the sedation has entirely worn off. Please arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home for your safety. Before you are discharged, you will be given prescription pain medications and a post-operation recovery plan, which you are highly encouraged to follow.
We recommend you take a week off from work and exercise. After the first week, you can resume light exercise except for chest muscle exercises, which can usually be resumed around four to six weeks.
We encourage patients to be gentle with their recovery because premature use of the pectoralis muscle can lead to potential complications such as displacement of the implant to the sides, fluid collection, or an increased risk of capsular contracture.
Dr. Hankins will see you regularly to check on your healing progress and show you various ways to massage your breasts so that your implants settle appropriately and give you the natural results you desire.

Breast Augmentation + Lift FAQ’S

Most patients find breast augmentation and breast lift surgery to be painless since it’s performed under anesthesia. You can expect minor swelling, bruising, and general discomfort during the early stages of your recovery. Dr. Hankins will prescribe medication and show you massages to help with pain relief and faster healing. You must follow the post-operative instructions to help with the most rapid recovery.
After your breast augmentation and breast lift, Dr. Hankins will have you return about a week post-surgery so he can monitor your recovery and remove any sutures and bandages. He will let you know of your next appointment at each appointment.
You can expect another appointment about a month or two later, followed by another one three months post-surgery, then again six months later. You may also have some photos taken at one of your final check-ups for a comparison photo.
While the results of your breast augmentation and breast lift could be immediately noticeable, depending on the change in your breasts’ appearance, you will be swollen and bruised over the next few weeks as you heal. We tell patients to wait three to four months for their breasts to reach the final resting position.
Certainly! Many women will combine their breast augmentation and breast lift with other body contouring procedures, such as a Brazilian Butt Lift or a Tummy Tuck. However, given this is already a combined procedure, we suggest you bring up any thoughts about further procedures at your scheduled consultation with Dr. Hankins so he can recommend the best way forward.
Breast augmentation and breast lift are surgeries that have associated risks with them. Given the combined procedure, it is even more vital that you pay attention to these ahead of making a decision:
