Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Introduction to Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A lymphatic drainage massage, or manual lymphatic drainage, is a method to relieve painful swelling caused by chronic illness or medical treatment. The massage will help move fluid buildup toward the body’s lymph nodes to help reduce the affected tissue area. You should be able to enjoy the results of your plastic surgery procedures – don’t let pain hold you back!

Premier Plastic Surgery is a state-of-the-art medical spa offering surgical and non-surgical treatments to restore and rejuvenate your body and skin. Call plastic recognized surgeon Christopher Hankins, MD, for a complimentary consultation.

Our Houston area office is located in Pearland, conveniently located to see lymphatic drainage massage patients in Lake Jackson, Clearlake, Friendswood, Marvel and the surrounding areas of South Houston.

What is a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

A lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle massage technique that directs fluid buildup, known as “lymphedema.” Lymphedema occurs when tissue retains fluid instead of sending it along the body’s lymphatic system. A medical procedure can often disrupt this natural process, leading to uncomfortable and painful swelling in the treatment areas.
An experienced plastic surgeon provider will offer lymphatic drainage massage after a medical procedure to help release lymphatic fluid in tissues and redirect it to the lymph nodes. Premier Plastic Surgery is happy to provide lymphatic drainage massage so that every patient may be as comfortable as possible after their procedures.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage FAQ’S

Initially I was not a proponent of lymphatic massage and I thought that that was just a gimmick. However, we had an aesthetician in our office who was skilled in administering lymphatic massage and she convinced me to let me try it. The results were nothing short of amazing. Lymphatic massage allows the rapid removal of soft tissue fluid which results in softening of the tissue, reduction of the size of the treated area and speeds resolution of any postoperative firmness or induration. Because the size of the affected area is reduced it is possible for patients to get into a smaller postoperative garment which optimizes the shaping of the body after extensive liposuction. Therefore if someone does not get lymphatic massage, the results may be compromised because fluid in the tissue will be slower to drain and the drainage may not be as complete as that obtained with lymphatic massage which can result in the formation of collagen and scar tissue which may blunt the results of contouring surgery.
No—on the contrary, a lymphatic drainage massage is intended to relieve pain and swelling. However, due to fluid buildup and fluid movement towards lymph nodes for clearing, some patients may experience headaches, nausea, or fatigue.
Lymphatic drainage massages are intended to relieve buildup and chronic conditions, so multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve lasting results. The goal is to reduce fluid buildup so you may be comfortable in your body.
Once that buildup has cleared, you may discontinue treatments if you desire.
Patients might not see immediate results from a lymphatic drainage massage. This technique will need consistent application over multiple sessions to see change.
We may discuss alternative treatments if you feel that you are not experiencing any changes after several sessions.
Absolutely. Many patients request a lymphatic drainage massage and other facial treatments to feel refreshed and rejuvenated after a session.
Please make your requests in your initial consultation so we can develop an individualized treatment plan to help fulfill all your aesthetic and comfort goals!
A lymphatic drainage massage is a low-risk, non-invasive treatment to help relieve pain and swelling. However, due to the fluid movement, some patients may experience the following side effects:
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • MusclFatigue
