What is a Mommy Makeover?

The term mommy makeover typically involves various procedures to help a woman regain her pre-baby body shape after childbirth and breastfeeding. Following the birth of a child, a woman’s body often has weak stomach muscles, a thicker waist, stretch marks, loose skin in the stomach area, and sagging breasts. Every woman has her degree of body concerns after pregnancy. The surgical procedure is personalized for the unique concerns of each mother.

Most commonly, procedures are combined to restore a flatter tummy, lift and shape the breasts, and reduce the circumference of the midsection, giving you a trimmer waistline and a more toned contour throughout your entire torso. A mommy makeover can include a tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, breast reduction, liposuction, BBL, and more. This procedure combination can be customized to fit your needs and goals.

Procedures You May Include in Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is a customizable cosmetic surgery plan that allows you to choose procedures based on your specific aesthetic goals.
While not limited to the list below, some of the more commonly combined surgeries include:
Tummy Tuck: Skin stretching to accommodate your baby may not return to its former size once you lose the “baby weight.” This can leave a “pooch” of loose skin around your midsection. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and reconnects the abdominal muscles that shifted out of place during pregnancy to reattain a flatter stomach.
Liposuction: If you find that some baby weight stubbornly clings to your body even with a healthy lifestyle, liposuction is an effective way to permanently remove unwanted fat cells for sleeker contours on your abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, back, and arms.
Breast Lift: Breasts that have enlarged during pregnancy/nursing often sag once they return to their average size. A breast lift can re-elevate your breasts to a more youthful position on your chest while redirecting your nipples for a “perky” outward projection.
Breast Augmentation: Breast implants add volume to your breasts. Choose your ideal implants to achieve a specific size, shape, and feel so that your breasts look more symmetrical and your body looks more proportional.
You may combine other procedures to rejuvenate your appearance and boost your confidence. Dr. Hankins will be more than happy to discuss your options during your Mommy Makeover consultation.

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Mommy Makeover?

Anyone who is struggling with the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding and looking to get their body back into pre-pregnancy shape can be a good candidate for a mommy makeover. You should also have realistic expectations, be a nonsmoker, and be done having children.
Generally speaking, if you’re a healthy adult woman, not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning on becoming pregnant, you’re likely a good candidate for mommy makeover surgery. It is best if you’re not planning to be pregnant again in the future since a pregnancy after mommy makeover procedures could alter your results.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

In the immediate postoperative period, patients are encouraged to walk around the house in a bent position for the first few days to avoid straining the abdominal suture line.
You’ll experience some swelling and soreness, which is normal and typically subsides after only a few days. Light activities can be resumed a few weeks post-op once the swelling and tenderness have lessened. It’s recommended to abstain from strenuous activities, like sex and exercise, for weeks, but each case is different.
Dr. Hankins will give you instructions on how to follow post-operatively to maximize the healing process. It is in your best interest to follow them, and if you have any questions, the staff at Premier Plastic Surgery is always available to answer them.

Mommy Makeover FAQ’S

We do not recommend undergoing this procedure before you no longer have kids. To ensure your results last, we suggest patients wait until they’re happy with the size of their family before looking into a mommy makeover.
Your surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, so you shouldn’t have any discomfort or pain during the procedure. Some mild pain is expected during recovery, but Dr. Hankins will prescribe temporary pain medications to alleviate any symptoms. We will also provide you with some instructions on how to make your healing experience more comfortable.
After your mommy makeover procedure, avoid blood thinners, smoking, heavy lifting, and strenuous exercise. You should rest as much as possible in the first few days to ensure proper healing.
Dr. Hankins will want to see you several days after your procedure and multiple times during the first few weeks of your recovery, during which time he will evaluate your healing process. After this initial check-up, you can expect a few more follow-up visits over the next six months to a year, depending on which procedures you received and how your body is healing.
It is possible to notice some immediate changes after your operation, but there will still be some swelling and bruising. If you had any body contouring, it might take a few weeks to a few months to see the finished results, and if you received any breast implants, it could take a few months for these to settle into their resting position.
Most patients should expect it to be about six months before they look their best post-surgery; however, each patient can have a different timeline.
Scarring is inevitable when it comes to invasive surgery. However, Dr. Hankins does his best to ensure any incisions he makes are discreetly located. The incisions are usually about an inch long but can be longer depending on the extent of the plastic surgery. The good news is that these incisions heal very well and are usually barely visible after a few months.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Hankins will be better able to inform you of scarring and what you can expect based on the procedures you choose.
Most patients can resume a complete exercise program within six to 10 weeks; however, it is critical to listen to your body and work with your surgeon to determine when you can safely exercise. Everyone heals differently, and considering every Mommy Makeover is customized to the woman, there is no singular timeframe.
A Mommy Makeover is a combination of several different body contouring and procedures combined, which can consist of a tummy tuck, full abdominoplasty, breast lift, or breast augmentation can be easily combined. Non-surgical procedures are also an easy add-on that can make an impactful (albeit temporary) difference.
If you have any particular goals that aren’t discussed or would like to hear Dr. Hankins’s expert suggestions for a surgical procedure that would be good for you, please bring them up during the consultation so that he can help you achieve your aesthetic desires.
Your health and safety are paramount to Dr. Hankins and his team. While safety is always his number one priority, every surgery has its risks and side effects associated with it. A Mommy Makeover has the following potential surgical complications:
  • Anesthesia risks
