What is a Laser Facial?

Laser treatments are medical procedures involving a highly focused laser light beam, which allows Dr. Hankins to perform precise movements, addressing the treatment of damaged tissue without affecting the healthy tissue in the same area. A laser facial, also called laser skin resurfacing or a laser peel, is a non-surgical, in-office treatment that heats the skin’s superficial and lower layers to cause controlled microdamage and activate the body’s healing response.

Who are the Best Candidates for a Laser Facial?

The ideal candidates for laser facial treatments are those with good skin elasticity, overall health, and a non-oily complexion. This procedure works more effectively on light to medium skin color. Those with light or moderate blemishes or wrinkles can benefit from laser facials. Non-smokers are often better candidates for this procedure as smoking can interfere with the healing process. In addition, any candidate for this procedure must understand what laser facials can do and have realistic expectations for their results.

What to Expect From a Laser Facial Treatment

Laser skin resurfacing, also known as laser facial treatment, uses a laser to improve your skin’s appearance or treat minor facial flaws. Our care team will numb your skin with medication. You might be sedated for those requiring a more extensive resurfacing of the entire face. The laser beams will destroy the outer layer of skin and heat the underlying skin to stimulate collagen production over time, resulting in better skin texture and tone. Most patients describe the feeling as similar to a mild sunburn, showing signs of swelling and redness. There is a chance of stinging or itching for a few days after the treatment. All patients respond differently to laser facial treatment.

Laser Facial Recovery

After laser facial resurfacing, your skin may react differently, but it usually feels like a mild sunburn. The treated area may be raw, swollen, itchy, red, and oozing, and you may experience stinging for a few days. Depending on the treatment depth, you may also have bruising, which should resolve in 7–10 days.
Your skin will usually dry out and peel around five days to a week after the procedure. New skin usually covers the area in one or two weeks, but full recovery can take at least a month. The redness may fade in two to three months, but it could take up to a year to completely disappear.

Laser Facials FAQ’S

Depending on the person, the pain level of laser facial treatment can cause some discomfort. Some patients compare the feeling during laser treatments to a rubber band snapping against the skin. However, most patients do not describe laser treatments as painful. It’s normal to experience a mild stinging or pinching. Our doctors will administer an anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Most itching, swelling, or burning symptoms will subside as the skin heals.
We suggest you discuss this with our plastic surgeons to understand the exact number of treatments you need. We can provide a personalized treatment plan based on your specific goals. The number of facial treatments depends on a case-by-case basis, factoring in the size of the area being treated and the density of the treated hair. Several patients can generally expect 4-6 sessions for the best immediate results. You will begin noticing a difference after 3 to 6 treatments.
Although you can see improvement in the texture and tone of the skin within the first week, the final results will take approximately three months to become apparent.
Absolutely! For stunning results, many of our Houston laser facial patients will combine their treatment with other skin rejuvenation treatments like RF microneedling or a chemical peel. When you come in for your consultation, please discuss your aesthetic goals with Dr. Hankins and our team so that we can make some expert recommendations.
