Keloid scars can be frustrating, persistent, and in many cases, life-altering. Over the years, I’ve treated many patients with keloids—most of whom found our practice through word-of-mouth after struggling to get results elsewhere.
Keloid treatment is not one-size-fits-all. The key is choosing the right approach for the right scar.
What Is a Keloid Scar?
A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that extends beyond the original wound. Unlike normal scars, keloids:
– Continue to grow over time
– May become thick, raised, and firm
– Can cause itching, discomfort, or cosmetic concern
They are also known for a high rate of recurrence if not treated properly.
Why Many Keloid Treatments Fail
Many patients come to us after receiving injections elsewhere with little or no improvement.
In most cases, the issue is not the concept of treatment—it’s the execution and persistence:
– Keloids are often undertreated
– They frequently require multiple, carefully timed injections
– Stopping treatment too early leads to recurrence
Because we do not rely on radiation, achieving control may take time—but it can be done effectively with a disciplined approach.
When Surgery Works: Ear Keloids
One area where we’ve had particularly strong success is ear keloids.
With a specialized protocol, we can:
– Completely excise the keloid
– Preserve the natural shape of the ear
– Minimize the risk of recurrence
However, not every patient is a candidate.
The keloid must be suitable for complete excision and closure without distorting the ear.
When those conditions are met, results can be dramatic.
When Surgery Is NOT the Best Option
Some areas of the body—especially the center of the chest—are prone to poor outcomes with surgery.
I’ve seen many patients where:
– A small keloid was excised
– It came back larger
– It was excised again—and became even worse
In these cases, we avoid surgery.
Instead, we use:
– Targeted injections
– Laser therapy
– A structured, ongoing treatment plan
This approach can produce excellent improvement without triggering further growth.
Every Keloid Is Different
Successful treatment depends on several factors:
– Location on the body
– Individual tendency to form keloids
– Tension on the skin from daily movement
– Size and duration of the scar
Because of this, treatment may involve:
– Surgery
– Injections
– Laser therapy
– Or a combination of all three
Our Approach
Keloid treatment is an evolving science, and we take it seriously.
We routinely review the medical literature to stay current with:
– New techniques
– Improved protocols
– Better long-term outcomes
Our goal is simple:
Control the keloid, minimize recurrence, and restore a natural appearance whenever possible.
The Bottom Line
There is no quick fix for keloids—but there is an effective strategy.
With the right approach:
– Many keloids can be significantly improved
– Some can be completely removed (in the right setting)
– Most can be brought under control
If you have a keloid scar that is affecting your confidence or quality of life, we invite you to schedule an evaluation. The first step is determining which treatment approach is right for you.
