Introduction to Semaglutide

Recent scientific research has shown that weight loss is more complex and challenging than diet and exercise alone. People who have adopted significant lifestyle changes may still find it difficult to lose or keep off excess weight. This is because the body has built-in evolutionary reasons to retain weight gain.

With semaglutide, this weight retainment process can be interrupted to provide longer-lasting weight loss. Premier Plastic Surgery in Houston area can help patients who want to lose and maintain their weight from semaglutide injections. Dr. Christopher Hankins and his staff proudly serve residents in Houston, Pearland, Lake Jackson, Friendswood, Clearlake, Marvel and the surrounding areas of South Houston.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide (Wegovy or Ozempic) is an FDA-approved weight loss medication for chronic weight management. It is sometimes called a GLP-1 medication because it mimics the GLP-1 hormone (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP hormone (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). It effectively decreases appetite and boosts metabolism. Semaglutide is a quick and efficient way to undergo massive weight loss.

GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the intestines. It is mainly responsible for regulating blood sugar and triggering feelings of fullness. Because of this, semaglutide was first used to treat type II diabetes.

Semaglutide also mimics the GIP hormone, slowing digestion and reducing appetite. GLP-1 and GIP hormones make this an effective medication for many weight loss patients.

What are the Benefits of Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is FDA-approved for weight loss management, while other medications have off-label use and are only approved for regulating type II diabetes. They must be combined with diet and restricted certain types of food intake to achieve weight loss.

Patients who receive semaglutide injections report the following benefits:

  • Increased and sustained weight loss
  • Decreased risk of developing diabetes and obesity-related illnesses
  • Slower digestion, leading to feeling “full” for longer
  • Increased metabolism

Who are the Best Candidates for Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is made for chronic weight loss management among obese (body mass index/BMI of 30 kg/m2) or greater and overweight (BMI of 27 kg/m2) adults who also have one or more weight-related medical problems.

These conditions may include:

  • type II diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • cardiovascular disease
  • high cholesterol

The best candidates for Semaglutide are patients who wish to lose significant weight and are committed to a healthy lifestyle to maintain their reduced weight.

Semaglutide is approved separately for type II diabetes and chronic weight loss management.

Semaglutide should not be used in combination with other GLP-1 receptor agonists. Patients with a personal or family history of acute kidney injury, low blood sugar, gallstones, or pancreatitis should consult with their doctor since Semaglutide might not be suitable for them.

Dr. Hankins will meet with you in a private setting, allowing you to feel comfortable as you take advantage of the personalized experiences offered in our cosmetic-oriented practice. Together, you and Dr. Hankins will be able to determine whether Semaglutide injections are right for you. Dr. Hankins will also demonstrate the proper injection technique so you may administer your treatments comfortably at home.

If you’re considering Semaglutide injections in Houston, Pearland, Lake Jackson, and the surrounding areas of South Houston, call us to schedule your consultation today.

What to expect from a Semaglutide treatment

Semaglutide will be administered as a once-weekly injection at our office. Patients will start with a dosage of 0.25 mg, which will be gradually increased to a maximum tolerated dose of 2.4 mg. Dr. Hankins will consult with you weekly to help track your progress and manage this dosage.

Due to the nature of the treatment, there are possible side effects from the medication, but they usually subside with continued use. Such as:

  • Bloating
  • Burping
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting

While these reactions are normal, please let us know immediately if you experience these side effects, as they may require a dosage change.

Every person’s body will react differently to the treatment, so you should never compare your journey to someone else’s. It is important to remember that this isn’t a quick fix and is certainly not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. We encourage our patients to be patient, understanding, and dedicated to specific lifestyle changes. Typically, the dosage will be increased a little more every four weeks as your body adjusts, and it could take four months or longer to see the best results.
