What Is a Breast Lift With Implants?

Breast augmentation and breast lift, medically known as mammoplasty and mastopexy, respectively, are cosmetic surgical procedures that address women’s challenges with the size, shape, or asymmetry of their breasts. The surgical technique for this combined procedure requires expertise in aesthetic plastic surgery to achieve both larger breasts and a more youthful appearance. Augmentation is usually done with implants, either artificial silicone or saline implants. Breast augmentation surgery combined with a lift addresses both volume loss and removes excess skin that causes sagging, creating perkier breasts with improved upper pole fullness.
The combined procedure will be an implant and then a lift to increase the breast size and raise the final resting place of the breast on the chest. This will be completed with a final nipple placement to define the overall contour. Look at the individual pages for breast augmentation and breast lift to learn more about each procedure. Dr. Hankins carefully evaluates the chest wall anatomy of each patient to ensure optimal placement of implants for the most flattering outcome.

What Is the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Implants?

Silicone and saline implants are both used in breast augmentation, but they differ in their composition and feel. Silicone implants are filled with a gel that closely mimics the natural feel of breast tissue, making them popular for a more natural look and feel. On the other hand, saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, which can create a firmer feel and are often considered more adjustable during surgery. Saline-filled implants are inserted empty and then filled once positioned in the breast pocket, allowing for smaller incisions during surgery. While both types of implants are FDA-approved, silicone implants tend to have a lower risk of visible rippling. However, saline implants are generally more affordable and easier to rupture or deflate if damaged.

Initial Consultation & Preparation for Surgery

During the initial consultation, Dr. Hankins evaluates the patient’s goals, breast aesthetics, and overall health to determine the best approach for the surgery. This visit includes a thorough examination to assess stretched skin, tissue laxity, and volume loss. Based on the patient’s anatomy and desired results, Dr. Hankins recommends either a lollipop or anchor breast lift to reshape and elevate the breasts. The patient also receives detailed pre-operative instructions to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery. This preparation stage is essential for creating a surgical plan tailored to individual needs and achieving a balanced, natural-looking outcome.

What Our Patients Say

“Dr. Hankins performed magic!”

I had the privilege of having Dr. Hankins perform a 2 stage wise pattern augmentation mastopexy in May 2019. I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2018 and lost SO must breast tissue. Approaching age 50 I was very self conscious about being totally flat chested and what I did have just sagged. Dr. Hankins performed magic! His professionalism, bedside manner and honesty was exactly what I wanted in a surgeon. My results are amazing! My breast are perfectly proportioned, the exact size I was desiring and I feel so confident about myself. I highly recommend Dr. Hankins and have every intention of having him perform any and all other future procedures that I will be having in Thank you to his staff and of course to you Dr Hankins!!!

Breast Lift With Implants:
A Step-by-Step Procedure

Anesthesia

The procedure begins with general anesthesia to ensure the patient remains comfortable and pain-free throughout the surgery. We always prioritize patient safety and aim to provide the best experience for each individual.
Once the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Hankins makes an anchor-shaped incision around the areola, down to the breast crease, and along the breast fold. This incision pattern is commonly used to address sagging breasts, allowing Dr. Hankins to remove excess skin and lift the breast tissue to create a more youthful appearance. We may also choose a lollipop incision, which does not require an opening along the breast crease.
After the necessary skin and tissue adjustments, breast implants are carefully placed to enhance the volume and shape of the breasts. The implant is typically inserted either above or below the chest muscle, depending on the patient’s preferences and body type. This step helps achieve the new breast shape, giving the chest area a fuller, more contoured look.
Dr. Hankins repositions the surrounding tissues to provide optimal contouring. The goal is to create a natural, balanced appearance by lifting and tightening the skin around the implants. This step ensures that the sagging breasts are lifted to their new position, enhancing the overall aesthetic outcome.
Finally, the incisions are carefully closed using sutures. This step is critical for ensuring proper healing while minimizing visible scarring. Breast lift with implants is an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day for comfortable recovery.

Breast Lift With Implants Recovery

After the procedure, Dr. Hankins’ staff will monitor you in the recovery room to make sure the sedation has entirely worn off. Proper wound healing is essential for optimal results, so patients are given detailed instructions on caring for their incisions and monitoring their recovery process. Please arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home for your safety. Before you are discharged, you will be given prescription pain medications and a post-operation recovery plan, which you are highly encouraged to follow.
We recommend you take a week off from work and exercise. After the first week, you can resume light exercise except for chest muscle exercises, which can usually be resumed around four to six weeks.
We encourage patients to be gentle with their recovery because premature use of the pectoralis muscle can lead to potential complications such as displacement of the implant to the sides, fluid collection, or an increased risk of capsular contracture.
Dr. Hankins will see you regularly to check on your healing progress and show you various ways to massage your breasts so that your implants settle appropriately and give you the natural results you desire. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your procedure helps extend the longevity of your results, as future weight fluctuations can affect the patient’s skin and potentially compromise your surgical outcomes.

Breast Augmentation + Lift FAQs

Is a breast augmentation + breast lift painful?
Most patients find breast augmentation and breast lift surgery to be painless since it’s performed under anesthesia. While most patients experience some temporary changes in nipple sensation following surgery, permanent changes are relatively uncommon. You can expect minor swelling, bruising, and general discomfort during the early stages of your recovery. Dr. Hankins will prescribe medication and show you massages to help with pain relief and faster healing. You must follow the post-operative instructions to help with the most rapid recovery.
While the results of your breast augmentation and breast lift could be immediately noticeable, depending on the change in your breasts’ appearance, you will be swollen and bruised over the next few weeks as you heal. We tell patients to wait three to four months for their breasts to reach the final resting position.
Certainly! Many women will combine their breast augmentation and breast lift with other body contouring procedures, such as a Brazilian butt lift or a tummy tuck. However, given this is already a combined procedure, we suggest you bring up any thoughts about further procedures at your scheduled consultation with Dr. Hankins so he can recommend the best way forward.
