What Are BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers?

As you may know, facial wrinkles naturally occur when you smile, squint, or laugh. The degree to which you have facial wrinkles can make you appear angry, tired, or sad.

BOTOX injections in the Houston area provide a dramatic improvement in the appearance of forehead lines, moderate to severe frown lines (corrugator), bunny lines (procerus), smile lines, and crow’s feet of the lateral angle or canthus of the eye.

The targeted facial muscle is relaxed using an injectable substance made from a neurotoxin (botulinum toxin A). This substance is FDA-approved, safe, and highly effective in treating dynamic wrinkles and forehead furrows. 

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin® are both neuromodulators. The two injectables can be used to treat the same types of wrinkles, and they are, in reality, competitors. BOTOX® Cosmetic is an Allergan® product, and Xeomin® is a Merz Aesthetics® product.

The main difference between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin® is that Xeomin® contains just one ingredient: botulinum toxin A. We call this a “naked injectable,” which means it has no protein component. A benefit of a pure-form injectable is that the body may become less resistant to it.  While not typical, you can develop antibodies to BOTOX® over time.

Who Are the Best Candidates for BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers?

It has been shown that the earlier BOTOX is started, the more extended skin elasticity will persist with time.

Deep, static wrinkles caused by the action of the facial muscles will not respond as well in younger skin with better elasticity and shallower wrinkles, especially when the wrinkles are dynamic, only in the skin with more excellent elasticity.

Please note that neuromodulators like BOTOX cannot lift jowls. Dr. Hankins is a surgeon whose patients often credit him with life-changing procedures – but he’s not a miracle worker! What to Expect From a BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers Treatment

Wrinkle-relaxing injections are relatively quick and easy. First, your skin will be cleansed, and if necessary, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area. Dr. Hankins will inject the appropriate amount of neuromodulator into the targeted areas. 

The entire process takes approximately 30 minutes. You can go home the same day!

Please note that BOTOX and other Wrinkle Relaxers cannot lift jowls or perform extensive facial reconstruction. If you would like to discuss additional facial recontouring procedures and treatments in your complementary consultation, please do so.

BOTOX & Wrinkle Relaxers Recovery

Given the noninvasive nature of BOTOX and wrinkle relaxers, recovery is quick and you will be able to resume your normal activities almost immediately following your treatment. After the injection, we request that you remain at the office for fifteen minutes to ensure there is no allergic reaction.

There might be some redness, swelling, or slight bruising at the injection sites, and they should usually subside within a few hours to a few days. We recommend you refrain from significant physical activity for a few days so that the toxin can settle in place. It is also recommended to avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas. It is also essential to follow the recommended skincare routine, so please make sure you do not leave the office without receiving post-treatment instructions.

Christopher Hankins, MD, is a plastic surgeon specializing in facial, breast, and body aesthetic surgery. He also has advanced training in hand surgery, breast reconstruction after cancer, and other reconstructive surgical procedures. Dr. Hankins completed five plastic surgery fellowships with highly distinguished physician mentors in the United States and the United Kingdom, including a Plastic and Microsurgery fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine and a Hand Surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Hankins earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his General Surgery training prerequisite for Plastic Surgery as established by the Residency Review Committee in Plastic Surgery and Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Hankins served as the Medical Director of the Wound Care Center at Lake Jackson Hospital from 2011 to 2014 and continues to treat wound care patients at his Premier Surgery Center and Lake Jackson Hospital.

In addition to his practice in plastic and aesthetic surgery, Dr. Hankins is actively involved in the study and clinical application of anti-aging medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Association of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Dr. Hankins has authored 19 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and serves on the editorial boards of four medical journals and as a reviewer on three others. He has been a presenter on various plastic surgical topics at the regional, national, and international levels.

Dr. Hankins has participated in plastic surgery medical missions in Peru, Bolivia, and Pakistan, where he performed a number of surgical procedures on disadvantaged children and adults. He sits on the Boards of Directors of the Agris-Zindler Children’s Foundation and the House of Charity.
